Southern Breakfast Classic, Buttery Biscuits (Day 6)
We woke up on Day 6 of the Alabama road trip at Grandmomma’s house with the smell of biscuits floating through the air and sunlight glinting off the lake. Before we packed up for another round of adventure, we gathered around the table for a Southern breakfast classic—flaky, buttery biscuits fresh from the oven, brushed with melted butter and still warm enough to melt a spoonful of jam.
They were soft on the inside, golden on top, and layered with love. Oliver drizzled his with honey. Ethan went straight for the sausage gravy. And just like that, the morning turned slow and sacred.
These biscuits are tied to Day 6 of Ethan & Oliver Adventures: The Great Alabama Road Trip. Before heading off to explore dinosaur bones, civil rights landmarks, and Alabama’s highest point, the boys filled up on something simple and steady—breakfast at Grandmomma’s. Food like this doesn’t just fill bellies—it tethers us to home.
Faith Reflection
Before hitting the road, we read from Lamentations 3:23:
“His mercies are new every morning.”
Just like warm biscuits, grace has a way of greeting us with fresh hope—right when we need it most.

Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ¾ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional, for slight sweetness)
- 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- ¾ cup cold buttermilk (plus 1–2 tbsp more if needed)
- 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment or lightly grease.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add cold buttermilk and stir just until combined. If dough seems dry, add an extra tablespoon of buttermilk.
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently pat into a ¾-inch thick rectangle. Fold in half, rotate, and repeat twice to create layers.
- Cut biscuits using a round cutter or glass, pressing straight down. Place close together on the baking sheet for soft sides or spaced apart for crisper edges.
Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden. Brush tops with melted butter while still warm.
